Posted by Credit Card Posts as Student Credit Cards
So you’re looking for the best credit card for a student huh? Well, there are several factors that you should look closely at when choosing a creditcard for a college student. Here are a few of them:
- The card should have a low annual percentage rate (APR). While students with no credit history can’t realistically expect an extremely low APR, they shouldn’t have to sign up for one with an exorbitant one, either.
- The credit card should have a very low (or no) annual fee. Really, no annual fee is best, and finding a card that doesn’t have one isn’t too tough. Annual fees are one of the things that I always make it a point to avoid.
- The card should have some sort of incentive or “rewards” program. Some credit card companies offer cash back. Others offer reward points that can be redeemed online for gift certificates. Many people favor the ones that feature airline miles that can be traded in for free flights. Pick an incentive program that you like and go for it, it’s nice to get rewarded for something you would normally do anyway.
- Avoid high credit limits in the beginning. Students who have credit cards don’t need (and typically shouldn’t have) large limits. High credit card limits encourage higher spending, and until young adults have some experience under their belts they shouldn’t have access to a large credit line capable of getting them into some serious debt.
Follow these guidelines as you’re looking for the best credit card for a student and remember to read everything carefully and thoroughly before signing on the dotted line.
