I came across some interesting (and disturbing) credit card and debt statistics today which were recently collected as a result of case studies and surveys…

  • 1 in 50 American households carry more than $20,000 in credit card debt.
  • According to the Federal Reserve Bank, 40% of American families spend more than they earn.
  • Roughly half of all credit card holders don’t pay the full amount of their credit card charges each month, and 11% say they usually pay only the minimum monthly payment.
  • The U.S. federal government has piled up $59.1 trillion in liabilities, or approximately $516,000 per U.S. household! (Not a credit card stat, per se, but very interesting nonetheless.)
  • U.S households received approximately 5.3 billion(!) offers for new credit cards in 2007.
